Together with the Leutkirch motor manufacturer ATE System and researchers from the ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), myonic has cracked the magic barrier of one million revolutions per minute. This is the highest rotational speed ever achieved by an electric motor. The first prototypes are in operation. In future, applications involving rotating parts will require ever higher speeds, for example drills used in medical technology, spindles used in material processing, or compressors in the automotive sector. In order to drive these directly, efficiently and in a controlled fashion, electric motors with the proper rotational speed and power will be needed. Up to now, the motors in industrial use have reached a maximum of 300,000 revolutions per minute.

Now myonic, ATE and researchers at the ETH Zurich have jointly developed a motor that can run at over one million revolutions per minute (16,667 revolutions per second) – a world record! The motor generates 100 W of power and is hardly bigger than a matchbox. The ball bearings are optimised for high rotational speeds and the rotor construction has a titanium casing that can withstand extreme centrifugal forces. The low-friction bearings and low-loss stator ensure the highest degree of efficiency. This milestone in the development of rotation speeds opens the door to unimagined dimensions for potential users’ applications.
