Dual studies

Through a dual study programme, you can put your acquired theoretical knowledge into practice by working in an innovative company. The study programme alternates between theory and practice in accordance with the dual training system. It lasts a total of six semesters, i.e. three years (six company phases in the company, six academy phases at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Ravensburg at the Friedrichshafen campus). You graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.).

We train:

  • Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng.) – Specialisation: Production Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng.) – Specialisation: Design and Development

Dual study programme – with in-depth practice

The study model “with in-depth practice” is a regular full-time study programme at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences with practical phases at our company. In contrast to a Bachelor’s degree programme, the practical component is higher. The dual study programme lasts 7 semesters, i.e. 3.5 years. You graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.).

We train:

  • Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng.) – Focus: Automation and digitalisation

We look forward to receiving your application documents with a cover letter stating the desired period and subject, a CV in tabular form and your relevant certificates.

Dual study programme at myonic – Experience report

Ms Katja Pennicke successfully completed her Bachelor of Engineering and now works as an engineer in process development.

We interviewed Katja Pennicke (KP) and her internal training supervisor Stefan Wachter (SW) about their experiences during their studies, its special features and the start of their professional life:

What expectations did you have at the beginning of your studies?
KP: “The connection between practice and theory was very important to me, i.e. to apply what I learned in real everyday work and to be able to assess the real requirements. I wanted to gain experience during my studies that I might otherwise have only got much later.”

To what extent has this been fulfilled?
KP: “Of course, I had to learn a lot of basics at the beginning of my studies. But I soon picked up more and more topics from the lectures, which were then also applied at work. This gave me a good understanding of the interrelationships, which in turn helped me to implement my first independent tasks, which were assigned to me early on at myonic. I was soon able to get a comprehensive overview of the job description and realised that I was on the right track.”

Did you feel well looked after internally?
KP: “Yes, definitely. When I needed something, Stefan always made time for me, despite his leadership role in process development. Colleagues were also very helpful and knowledgeable and supported where they could.”

What are the advantages of this type of study?
SW: “For the student, the advantages are obvious: early clarity in choosing a career, lots of variety, the combination of theory and practice. The student has already got to know the company, is integrated and thus already has their “foot in the door” – and is already earning something on the side!
For the company, it is a great benefit to accompany the student over several years and to get to know him or her intensively so that he or she can be perfectly deployed after completing their studies. In addition, students are allowed to work on structured topics – as part of their project or Bachelor’s thesis – for which there is no time in day-to-day operations. The responsibility is good for the young people and the preparation helps the company a lot. The DH degree programme is not a normal degree programme with a relaxed student life; students have a tight schedule and have to put their backs into it. We need people like that in our company!”

What is it like for you to accompany young people as they start their careers?
SW: “I really enjoy working with young people and seeing their development from student to graduate. We and the university provide the tools – as long as things are going in the right direction (which has always been the case), I’m happy!”

What was the dual study programme like – how did the three years work out?
KP: “It was always divided into 3-month blocks, half at the DHBW RV (Friedrichshafen campus) and half at myonic. In the beginning, the theoretical studies started with longer academic phases. During the whole time, there were several projects and pieces of coursework to be done and, of course, the bachelor thesis to be written at the end.”
SW: “At the beginning it is important to give the students an overview. In the first quarter of the year, the young people are assigned to the training workshop where they learn the basics of metalworking. In parallel, all newcomers go through the departments and can get an impression of the processes early on. We also keep in touch with the young people during the theory phase. After only six months in the company, the first project work is already on the agenda.”

What did you particularly like during the training?
KP: “The proximity to production and the cooperation with colleagues. myonic offers an interesting environment and I enjoy dealing with machines and processes. And as I said before, the variety between lectures and working life.”

What tasks were you assigned? Did you have your own projects?
KP:” I had my own project in each practical phase, so four in total, and in addition I was assigned various side jobs that I supervised independently. I really appreciated this responsibility. I completed my first practical phases and project work in process development and my Bachelor’s thesis in the logistics department.

What is your conclusion at the end of the study period and what do you take with you for your future career?
KP: “The dual study programme offers very good opportunities to put the future profession through its paces and to get an understanding of the big picture. In addition, it is much easier to start a career because you have already had a taste of the working world during the practical phases and work independently at an early stage. All in all: I would do it again!”

Thank you both for the interview and good luck to you Katja for your future career!
